Periodontics

Gum disease is caused by plaque build up on the teeth, leading to bleeding, red, or swollen gums, and can progress to periodontitis with bone loss and loose teeth if untreated. Regular checkups, professional cleaning, good oral hygiene, and avoiding smoking help prevent and manage gum disease, with treatment focused on deep cleaning to restore long term gum health.

Gum disease, also known as gingivitis, is caused by plaque build-up on the teeth due to bacteria in the mouth. If left untreated, it can lead to bleeding, red, or swollen gums and may progress to periodontitis, where deep gum pockets form, bone loss occurs, and teeth can become loose or fall out. Regular dental checkups and hygienist visits can detect and reverse early gum disease, while smoking increases the risk and severity of gum problems.

Gum disease can involve bacteria that can enter the bloodstream and travel to major organs. Whilst more research is underway, there are associations to suggest this may:

  • Contribute to heart disease
  • Increase the risk of stroke
  • Increase a woman’s risk of having a premature, low weight baby
  • Pose a threat to those with diabetes

Our aim is to promote gum health in the least invasive and most cost effective manner. Scaling and careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and tartar is necessary on affected teeth with deep gum pockets. This treatment can have limitations and more complex treatments may be indicated to restore health.
