Sleep Apnoea

Snoring & Sleep Apnoea

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) occurs when the airway becomes blocked during sleep, leading to reduced oxygen levels, poor sleep, and daytime tiredness. Habitual snoring can be a sign of OSA. Custom made mandibular advancement appliances can help keep the airway open and improve sleep quality.

A mandibular re-positioning appliance is a dental appliance, like a gum shield, which is worn in your mouth while you sleep. It is also known as a mandibular advancement device. Wearing the device holds the airway open whilst you are sleeping, so that breathing becomes easier and oxygen levels in the blood are normalised. The appliance should also control your snoring.

It is essential that you have a complete dental assessment before being measured for this appliance.

A dental assessment will minimise or prevent any complications in the future. If you are not ‘dentally fit’ the dentist may refuse to provide you with an appliance.
